What to Expect

Here's what happens during your visit, so you can come prepared and feel at ease.

Your thyroid evaluation includes a physical examination, thyroid ultrasound, and laboratory testing. If a nodule is identified, fine-needle aspiration biopsy is performed to determine if surgery is needed. For hyperparathyroidism, we localize the abnormal gland using sestamibi scan and/or ultrasound. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, typically lasting 1-3 hours. Intraoperative nerve monitoring protects your vocal cords, and IOPTH testing confirms cure in parathyroid surgery. Most patients go home the same day or next morning. We monitor calcium levels, adjust thyroid hormone replacement as needed, and schedule long-term surveillance.
