Treat Sleep Apnea Without a CPAP Mask — Inspire Therapy

Inspire is an FDA-approved implantable device that treats obstructive sleep apnea by stimulating the hypoglossal nerve to keep your airway open during sleep — no mask required. Ideal for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP and meet specific criteria. The system is implanted during an outpatient procedure and controlled by a simple handheld remote.

What to Expect

Here's what happens during your visit, so you can come prepared and feel at ease.

The Inspire evaluation begins with confirmation of your sleep apnea diagnosis and CPAP trial documentation. Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) is performed to confirm your airway collapse pattern is suitable for hypoglossal nerve stimulation — specifically, absence of complete concentric collapse at the palate. If you qualify, the device is implanted during a 2-hour outpatient procedure involving two small incisions: one in the neck and one in the chest. The system is activated one month post-surgery, and stimulation settings are fine-tuned over subsequent visits. Most patients report dramatic improvement in sleep quality, energy levels, and daytime alertness.

When to See a Doctor

You may be a candidate for Inspire if you have moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (AHI 15-65), have tried CPAP without success or cannot tolerate it, and have a BMI under 32-35. Patients who have been searching for a CPAP alternative for sleep apnea in Massachusetts should ask our specialists about Inspire candidacy evaluation. A sleep study and DISE procedure will determine if this therapy is right for your anatomy.
